Babar Azam Replies to Criticism About His Strike Rate in T20 Cricket
Focus Is on Team, Not Public Opinion
Former Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam has responded to the ongoing criticism about his strike rate in T20 cricket. He said that he always plays based on what the team needs, not what people expect from him.
In a recent interview with a local news channel, Babar — who currently captains Peshawar Zalmi — spoke about his performance during the powerplay overs, a topic that has led to much debate among fans and cricket experts.
Dropped from New Zealand Series Due to Strategy Shift
Babar and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan were left out of Pakistan’s squad for the recent T20I series in New Zealand. Reports suggest this was part of a new plan to adopt a more aggressive style of play.
“I Know Where Cricket Is Heading” – Babar Azam
Babar said he understands the importance of playing fast in today’s game but added that he sticks to his natural style.
“I play my own game,” Babar said. “There’s a lot of talk about strike rate these days, and I know where cricket is going. But I don’t need to prove myself to anyone — people already know the kind of player I am.”
He stressed that his approach is always based on what’s best for the team and the situation.
Flexible Batting Positions for Team’s Benefit
Babar also pointed out that he has been very flexible with his batting position throughout his career.
“No one has changed batting positions as much as I have,” he said. “Whenever a new player comes in, it’s usually me who adjusts.”
He mentioned playing at number three, opening the innings, and switching roles depending on what the team or franchise needs.
“For me, Pakistan comes first. If the team wants me to open, I will. If they need me to play at number three or six, I’m okay with that.”
No Personal Agenda About Opening
Babar denied having any personal desire to always play as an opener.
“I never insisted on opening. I started my career at number six and moved up the order. I’ve even opened in Test cricket. I’ve always been willing to bat wherever the team needs me.”
He concluded by saying he’s ready to play at any position for the team, even if it affects his personal performance.
